Research Question:
Examine in what ways moving from Dell Minis to Chromebooks in
classrooms will impact student achievement and engagement?
· How will quicker start up times and
increased connectivity/reliability impact student engagement?
· How will having Chromebooks impact
achievement in a math and an English classroom?

When I began reading your blog I had to ask myself what is a Chromebook. So I looked them up and thought how amazing are these, with as much of Google we've been using I'm interested to see the results of your research and see how students feel about working with them to increase their achievement.
ReplyDeleteI like your plan. I, like Marissa, did not know what a Chromebook was. I do have a couple of questions, are you going to give a percentage for student involvement? and increase in test scores?
ReplyDeleteYes, I plan on taking field observation notes and tracking percentage of assignments turned in. Our administration is also very active in classroom walkthroughs. They monitor student engagement and involvement through student talk and student questions. I will use the data they gather to supplement the data that I am able to gather through observation.
DeleteHi Nikki,
ReplyDeleteYour topic of using Chrome books sounds interesting, and your plan is well put together. I was wondering, are you only using the chrome books for web only? I would think that a disadvantage would be that the chrome books will be limited in that there is not as much software as there would be for the dell which runs a microsoft OS. I will following your research.
Chromebooks are limited to internet only, that is one disadvantage to them. Our math classes are testing the flipped classroom model and all of their work is online. Students watch videos that cover the 'lecture' part of class at home and then in class is reserved for questions, explanation and hands on time with the teacher. The flipped classroom operates under the idea that the teacher is the expert and should be the one there to help out when students are working on homework. All of their 'lecture' videos are posted online and then students quiz and test online as well. Students are able to work ahead if they choose. The flipped classroom could have easily been my action research plan, but since I'm Ed Tech, I needed a technology piece so I went with the implementation of Chromebooks.
DeleteYour projects seems well thought out. I would have also liked to use the flip classroom as my action research. So, how do the students perform there assignments on the Chromebooks. Does each teacher have a website with assignments posted. (Blackboard or Moodle)
ReplyDeleteI guess I wanted to know how many participants are you going to have for your surveys. Also what tool will you use to survey the participants.
Your research plan sounds very interesting. I think adding the technology piece will appeal to freshman students and help making Algebra I and English I more engaging. I like that you are looking at how it will impact their STARR scores. I also like that you are using surveys. Good luck with your research.
